Featuring a Cordoba Gipsy Kings Electric Flamenco
Acoustic/Acoustic-Electric
Dec 27, 2006
Tom took his Cordoba Gipsy Kings Electric Flamenco guitar to the December 5th episode of the show and talked about Mauro Guiliani’s right hand finger patterns, blue-jazz scale theory, the Guitar Hero music video game, tornado stories, and rebounding romances. A caller asked about the “pick and flick” technique, and Tom also talked about the value of fake books.

Nov 29, 2006
Tom took his Taylor 714ce 6-string to the November 21 episode of the show. It’s a powerful guitar with cedar and rosewood and a Fishman blender pickup system. A caller requested some easy Spanish guitar licks for practicing on his own. Tom and the crew talked about Crystal Gayle, Branson, Missouri, NYC, diplomatic lies and the homogenization of America. Phil has been on the show since 1997 -- over 400 episodes -- and they can only think of one he missed. It was his birthday.

Featuring a Larrivee L-03 Guitar and Gibson F-9 Mandolin
Acoustic/Acoustic-Electric
Oct 31, 2006
Tom took his Larrivee L-03 guitar to the October 24th episode of the show and accompanied one of his mandolin students on a couple of fiddle tunes and Girl from Ipanema. Ed’s mandolin, a fine Gibson F-9, inspired some tremolo improvisations from Tom. Tom also talked about how to create instant guitar solos. A caller requested a “funky” version of Stairway to Heaven, which led to discussion about a tendency among the uninitiated to call Stairway to Heaven “classical” guitar because it’s arpeggiated.

Featuring a Lowden
Acoustic/Acoustic-Electric
Oct 19, 2006
Tom took his Lowden to the October 10th episode of the show and talked about the enduring quality of well-made instruments. He also gave some background about the origins of the show and his interest in music literacy and media production. Tom has been involved with public access for more than fifteen years, including through the Wayne’s World years when mainstream television made a point of bashing public access media. Who thinks of that these days with YouTube’s success and so many people producing their own media?

Featuring a Cordoba Gipsy Kings Electric Flamenco
Acoustic/Acoustic-Electric
Sep 16, 2006
Tom took his Cordoba Gipsy Kings electric flamenco to the September 12th episode of the show and played more of his flamenco that isn’t flamenco. Callers asked about imitating the Eagles, Tom’s opinion about Esteban, and wondered how old Phil really is. One of Tom’s classical guitar students was a guest on the show and played a piece by Fernando Sor, and then accompanied Tom while he played Greensleeves on his 100 plus year old Italian mandolin.

Featuring a Taylor 714ce
Acoustic/Acoustic-Electric
Aug 5, 2006

Tom took his Taylor 714ce 6-string to the August 1st episode of the show and talked about fingerpicking and contrafacts. You can copyright lyrics and melody, but not chord changes. Contrafacts are tunes based on the un-copyrighted chord progressions from popular songs, like Hotel California, which was requested (we think) by pint-size caller Maggie. He also had a synesthesia-type moment: every time he plays a piece of his called Little Black Cat his nose itches. His students have a similar synethesiatic response when they play a certain passage of Tarrega’s Adelita: they salivate. Tom has seen it happen many times: music affects the body. He also had calls from Amanda, niece of the drummer for Little Feat, and Country Time Bob who requested Buck Owens. And in the last two minutes of the show a viewer requested Dueling Banjos from the movie Deliverance which Tom played as the credits rolled.

Featuring a Taylor 12-String
Acoustic/Acoustic-Electric
Jul 2, 2006

Tom took his Taylor 12-string to the June 27th episode of the show and demonstrated the backstrokes and scissors strums he uses. He also talked a bit about the history of 12-string (an American invention) and some its cousins such as vihuelas and bajo sextos. For those flying for the July 4th holiday he talked about putting your hard shell guitar cases inside bicycle boxes with lots of padding for added protection. Roving cam footage was caught by PATV Intern, Brianne Boysen.

No Tom’s Guitar Show on July 4th: PATV will be closed the week of July 4th. Aside from observing the holiday, several members of the PATV staff and board will be in Boston for the Alliance for Community Media (ACM) conference.
